Indulging a in a little idle chit-chat couldn't hurt, especially if it made the high elf come off her high horse. Honestly, she was tall enough as was and didn't really need the extra podium. "Ah, I just sort of came into town. I don't usually stay in many places for too long, but I thought settling in one place for at least a little longer than usual couldn't hurt." Aislin replied to Anna. "I'm not surprised you haven't met one of us before. We're usually not terribly social and how should I say . . . the social ones often give us a bad reputation? I'm surprised you're one for chitchat with the glares you gave me on the way here." It didn't matter how many run of the mill Dark Elves someone could meet in their life, they'd always remember the crazy ones it seemed. Well, that was just the way of things wasn't it? No reason to make note of something un-noteworthy, and no reason to remember the things that go without note.
It was tedious, but at least most people were professional about it.
"I propose that, in the interest of effectively dealing with threats we say more about what each of us can do. Perhaps after Kouko's report since that seems to be what's on our fearless leader's mind." Aislin commented after Annariel had laid into Kouko, and handled it without a hint of arrogance. She was proud of the High Elf, in a way. She'd wanted to chastise Kouko herself in less forward way, but Annariel was, at the very least, on point and seemed to be proving herself worthy of leaderly roll she wanted to take.
After waiting for Kouko to report she weighed in about her general skill set. She didn't want to say too much or she could see things quickly turning into torches and pitchforks given the temperament of about half the party. "I'm not much of one in terms of big flashy fireballs or anything. I specialize more in . . . Ah~ let's say debilitating rather than damaging?" Aislin thought of the best way to effectively describe her magic without making it sound like she was some sort of horrific monster. She supposed describing herself as a witch may not have been the best introduction. There wasn't much she could do about that now, so it wasn't worth fretting over in particular. At the very least, maybe the quest could amend their thoughts on her. If not . . . well, being feared wouldn't exactly be awful, would it? "I can also make poisons or concentrate existing poisons. That should pair well with Emmy's Arrows." Hm, that did sound a bit suspicious, but she supposed the party would think what it would think anyways. Especially this 'M.' If there were any kind of cat that that M reminded Aislin of in particular, it was a cat in a room full of falling pots.
Kouko seemed more like the kind of cat that ran in and out of rooms without rhyme or reason . . . though there was an explanation behind the most recent escapade. Then again, most cats probably had intentions but couldn't communicate with people, and if they could, probably wouldn't say much except the briefest word about their actions and intentions. So, Aislin supposed, the comparison still stood up.
And what could she say about Anna? . . . well, she was a graceful gazelle she kept half expecting to trip mid graceful leap from thinking too much about grace. Merely, initial impressions, but it would be interesting to see how they panned out.

Thankfully, as Mairwen kept up he kept his eyes squarely on his compatriot – while not really helping the scouting business she was up to, it did mean that he was able to catch her sign language… well, as best as he could. Was the house she was pointing at safe? No no, now she looked cross… oh, there was something inside? O-Oh… that was why she was making such a fuss. Hopefully she didn’t find his awkward shrug earlier too obnoxious. Regardless of their fumbled communication, Mairwen trailed Kouko’s path across the town’s canopy with renewed caution as she continued ahead; albeit maintaining a good distance between the pair else they only made their chances at stealth worse. Eventually, they finished their circuit – but then the girl just up and vanished into the streets. Gasping to himself, the poor feline began to panic a little bit… the whole point was they were going to avoid them, right?!
Glancing about worriedly, Mairwen was torn over whether he ought to chase after his comrade or hold his ground – she probably wanted the latter, but if she got in any trouble… unsheathing an arrow from his quiver, the unlucky little hero prepared to notch it before he made any plans to catch up with the cat. Deep breathes, and then he could get to work… only for a yawn behind him to make the poor boy jump a good foot into the air out of surprise; fur standing on end like a frightened tabby. Whirling in terror, Mairwen almost let his arrow fly straight through Kouko’s head… he’d had a bad enough day as it was, he didn’t need a mischievous brat on his team as well!
”B-Be careful, geez! Don’t sneak up on your own allies!” snapped the boy through hushed tones, unsurprisingly in no mood for Kouko’s relaxed nature. All the same, he was glad he wouldn’t have to go chasing her around the streets, either. ”Let’s just get moving and get back to the others before they get paranoid. And, seriously, don’t do that again... we know we’re in hostile territory, so there could be anyone skulking around…” Folding his arms with a huff after sheathing his bow and arrow, Mairwen wasn’t in any mood to care for the girl’s appetite – what was she doing bringing bloody milk to a serious quest, anyway?! It was a wonder she wasn’t clinking around the whole time with that on her person…
Mairwen didn’t need to be told twice to get moving, though, tracing a path along the rooftops back to their group – while briefly confused by their movement, he was at least a meagre enough ranger to follow their footprints to their new hideaway. While still annoyed, the boy was soon on guard again instead… he still couldn’t trust that witch. Staying silent while Kouko earned her scolding, he paid more attention to Aislin’s input… a deep frown coloured his face. ”Um, I appreciate the thought, but… my arrows are really fragile, they can’t really… take poisons…” replied the feline evasively, glancing away as he spoke – lying through his teeth wasn’t really his style, but he really didn’t want to ever have to poison his weapons. Especially not with a witch involved. He could sleep at night with blood on his hands, but he didn’t want to make his enemies suffer like that…
Mairwen would leave the report to Kouko, not really wishing to steal her thunder – it’d be rude to call it his own work. But, he had his own things to say, anyway. ”It looks like the other groups around the city are pretty spread out, and aren’t in any real state for their own recon… it’s probably safe to move around, at least. The rooftops were ideal for us, but I wouldn’t take that path unless you’re sure you can keep up… the streets seemed okay, though, so it shouldn’t cause you any inconvenience.” mused Mairwen, unsheathing an arrow to use as a pointer and beginning to draw a mock map along the ground with its end. ”It’s not great, but I think I remember most of the intersections and blocks we passed… could you mark what you saw on here, Kouko…?”

After having her own reward for the good scouting (the milk she had before), Kouko felt more than energized to go back to her team with her report, she also felt somewhat bad at 'M's reaction but she couldn't help it... She didn't know her nor how to treat her properly. After being finished with the scouting both of them proceeded to go back to the elves. As she thought, they all seemed to have chosen the town as their path to get to the mines; she also thought about it as they approached Aislin and Anna but she couldn't really relate if it was her fault or they deciding on their own without asking her. After meeting with the elves and hearing the elves speak Kouko couldn't help but stay absentminded through the whole conversation. She did hear a few things here and there, mostly what she wanted to hear but that was about it. She finally, unconsciously, made it clear that she was not paying attention at all by yawning and stretching herself as they both were finished.
"Sneak is an option... It's safe as long as we avoid fighting them all" Replied Kouko to the only question she actually heard from Anna.
"Poisons..." The only thing she got from Aislin's speech, that and that they were supposed to be saying what they were good at? Apparently. "I am a Slayer but my damage relies on 1 vs 1, I don't have problems in fighting multiple enemies but my damage is not the best..." Said Kouko after Aislin finished speaking. She then stopped briefly taking a 3rd bottle of milk off her belt, she had about 2 left now "I can fight is what I'm saying but I'm better at scouting and exploring... I also prefer fighting alone" Finished Kouko while opening her milk bottle and having a drink from it, letting Mairwen say her part.
Unlike 'M', Kouko was closer to danger and was able to see what they would be dealing with. She decided not to interrupt her and waited patiently for her to finish. Right after 'M' finished, she used her index to draw dots on the sketch on the ground marking where her enemies where. She couldn't really speak as she was still finishing her drink while pointing the places. "hah..." After finishing her drink, she proceeded to explain the situation more calmly.
"There is a big group of Gnolls in the center of the city, about 6 or more of them and the leader was with them... Tall and ugly. From my own knowledge, sneaking through the center could be hard so we should be prepared... that's also the only way to get to the mines..." She then pointed at the second dot near the exit of the town "And here was a smaller group, I saw 2 Gnolls but there could be more... They were all about the same size so probably no leader? I have no idea..." She then sat carelessly on the ground letting her legs rest and receive sun after explaining the situation. Her team was also full of girls so there was no need to worry about showing some of her skin, or so she thought for the moment.

Anna listened to Aislin, so the witch was a simple wanderer or at the very least that was all that she wanted to share and that suited Annariel fine. This was a casual chit chat, while the potentially worse could happen to their companions. Without taking her gaze of the village, the High Elf Shield Warden replied back, her tone casual.
"I see we are in a similar circumstance then, I've also been moving around from place to place so to speak." Then Anna sighed, when her initial reaction to her companions was brought up. "Ah yes, I blundered didn't I?" Annariel's turned her head towards Aislin "I apologize, It's just that even after several decades of being around their kind, it still surprises me to see children in these kind of situations." Of course, Annariel was referring to the age difference that Elves tended to have with the other species and though she technically understood that her view was skewed and that her companions might technically be "adults" there was still the fact that to her anything shorter than 40 years was an infant.
Annariel returned her gaze towards the village. "I didn't mean anything bad by it, just that I was shocked. Still is reassuring to have another Elf around."
Then upon Kouko's return...
Annariel was in theory satisfied. In theory she liked the idea of the group sneaking through the village, if Kouko's report was certain then it was a good option and the least time consuming. She loathed the idea of being stranded in these mountains at night.
Regardless, though in theory things had shaped out. Annariel thought that her companions were a mess. The one she least like so far, was of course the trouble nonchalant cat girl. Annariel had been yelled enough in her life to know when someone wasn't paying attention and on the other side of the spectrum was their ranger. Mairwen so far looked unreliable at best and Annariel hoped that her pet talk could fix that but it didn't seem to have an effect.
The real conundrum for Annariel was if she forced the issue more or if she ignored it and merely hope for the best?
The answer was of course, to force the subject. She didn't care if she wasn't well liked but that they could work together. This is why she didn't look forward to working with other species...
Walking towards Kouko who had sat down, Annariel bowed down and reached out for the cat girl. Her hand grabbing, no pinching her cat ear at least if Kouko didn't move out of the way.
Regardless Annariel said; "What did I just say, huh?" Annariel said, her tone really severe. "Don't ignore us, listen to what we say and work with us... not on your own!" Annariel hadn't snapped and neither was she upset but putting a scary face was a certainty. If she had been pinching Kouko's furry ear then she would let go by this point, then turned her attention to Mairwen.
"What's wrong with your arrows?" One thing Annariel didn't appreciate was dishonesty or being lied too. "If there is something you want to tell us, please don't be shy." though Annariel didn't linger on her subject and instead, began to walk towards the village.
"We'll move in single file. Kouko go first, Aislin follow after her, M behind and I'll take up the rear." Her tone wasn't as comprehensive as before hand and instead it felt more like a drill sergeant.

Annariel was quick say, what Aislin could only assume to be, a repentance for her previous actions. She at least seemed sorry-ish enough to satisfy Aislin. "Ah, well, if you're willing to admit a blunder, I can't really say I'll hold it against you." Aislin replied. It wasn't quite an apology, but it was certainly more than she usually got, even if Annariel just implied it was only for being another elf.
Though, at least being acknowledged just as an elf was sort of nice. Just putting differences aside at least a little. Aislin had to wonder however, how much Anna would maybe be for a more casual relationship once the job was done. If Anna could afford her at least a little dignity, even on the shallow basis of being an elf, that was certainly better than nothing.
Kouko seemed exactly as flighty as her initial impressions proved. Something Anna didn't react to kindly too and which elicited a small, but immediately stifled laugh from Aislin. Kouko's antics were vaguely amusing, but also seemed as though they'd be troublesome in the long run. At the very least, she didn't seem to be very communicative.
M's reaction however, was certainly odd. "I wouldn't be too hard on Emmy. She's probably too caught up on reputation. Ah~ I can only hope she'll be open minded enough to see that not all witches are wicked." Aislin commented. Well, she certainly didn't think herself to be wicked. It's not like she went out of her way to torture people or curse princesses or anything like that. Maybe being wicked was more abstract than that?
Hm, questions for later.
It was tempting to give M's hair a ruffle, but she might scare the poor thing a little too much. She seemed awfully skittish. What exactly was she doing all this way out on a mission in the first place if she couldn't handle it?
She fell into line as Annariel instructed but noticed a problem that . . . happened to work to her advantage. "Ah, Anna dear, since Emmy is shorter than me, wouldn't it be better if she took the place ahead of me in case she ends up needing to shoot?" Aislin asked, acting according to Annariel's response regardless, though she could always hope.
"Oh, Emmy, you didn't tell us if you had any skills beyond a bow." Aislin commented, hoping for more information on the matter, at least for Annariel's sake since she seemed to be insisting on trying to take command.

Mairwen could only sigh as Kouko chatted on about her loner approach – what was she doing in a job like this if she wanted to work alone so desperately? Mairwen liked to act on his own too, but it was just kinda stupid to yammer on about it when you signed up to a job with a group of people involved… alas, the rest of his team wasn’t much better. The elf was snarling at the poor feline, now… she had the same point as Mairwen had in mind, but he really didn’t agree that it was wise to pick a fight over it. A-And, wha! Now she was looking at him, too! Jolting a bit upon being confronted, the poor cat looked like a startled deer.
”T-They’re fragile, so anything even a bit caustic…” began the mousey boy, only for Anna to turn her attentions elsewhere already – it was certainly for the best, but having his bluff called in the first place was a worry. And that witch was haunting about, too… ugh! Her nerve! Caught up on reputation, whining about witches being wicked; what was she on about now? He might’ve trusted her more if she hadn’t been so brattish in the first place… ‘Emmy’, augh! Better than Mary, but coming from her it almost seemed more insulting. Wait, how did she even come to conclusion of arrows relating to reputation…? Eh? W-Was she a mind-reader? Augh, she was even worse than he thought! Not again!
Frowning ever more as the situation seemed to just get worse and worse, Mairwen was definitely in no mood to answer Aislin’s further question – as if there was a chance in hell that he’d talk about his singing in this sort of group. ”I’m a ranger. I’ve already done recon, see? Anything else is none of your business.” replied the feline quite a bit more huffily than he had intended; his grumpy state beginning to overwhelm his meek persona. Now, the last thing he wanted was a witch standing behind him… ”I’ll be fine, thanks… I just have to move around you even if you do end up in between, so I don’t see the problem. I’m not using a longbow or anything, so notching and firing doesn’t force me to stand still...”
All the same, Mairwen darted into the position he’d been ordered to; trying to cool himself off a bit – no point getting so ticked off about his team! A self-centred cat, a hyper-aggressive elf, and… well, a witch. It was so scary… w-well, at least the elf seemed to have her mind on the mission. He didn’t mind being ordered around too much. But… as he settled down, another fact came knocking on his head again… in front of him, behind him, all around him; in control! They were all girls… trembling with unease, the boy felt like fleeing all over again… but! He had a job to do! J-Just, a little bit longer… maybe he could keep his distance later since he was a ranger and all… ”L-Let’s n-not tarry…! We’ve wasted a lot of t-time already!”

Post by Kouko Sawamura on Oct 29, 2016 1:33:14 GMT -4
Having some fresh milk and the sun hitting her skin surely felt great for Kouko, her face didn't show it but she was enjoying her time on the ground while ignoring the fuss and chattering around her. The peaceful moment that she was enjoying would only last shortly as a weird feeling of pain shocked her body through all her spine. Her ear was hurting and in front of her covering the sun was Anna scolding her, it was impossible for her to listen to a single word she said given the pain she was feeling and all she could do was but awkwardly beg for mercy.
"Please... let go... it... hurts...nya...!" said Kouko with teary eyes until the elf let go of her. She still didn't understand what was the problem but instinctively and forced by the cat spirit, her body moved on its own, climbing through Anna's back who would hardly notice her weight and onto her shoulders, finally reaching her ear and biting it as hard as she could leaving but a scratch in place with her sharpened teeth if she was not stopped.
After she gained consciousness again and not feeling any kind of regret for it, Kouko climbed down and cleaned herself a little bit only to turn her eyes to the other elf for a moment. Her words of switching the formation were a bit questionable, so far she only shortly got to work with 'M' and she was fine so suggesting to switch was odd in her eyes. "Is there something wrong with me?" Thought Kouko while staring at Aislin with a confused expression on her face, she couldn't really relate why but she didn't want to bother with asking either.
Then to her own surprise and after finally caring to listen to the situation, she saw the two elves constantly pressing on 'M'. She didn't approve that at all and she had only a little to say. "Stop..." said Kouko with a soft voice, her tone however remarking a bit of disgust at the situation at hand as she moved closer to 'M' only to stand in front of her. The difference in heights between the two was a little remarkable, Kouko being the shortest of them all yet stepping up in front of her to defend her. " 'M' is a great ranger and she looked after me while I scouted the town..." She then turned to 'M' and hugged her, pulling her a bit away from the other two if she'd let her, either way moving her around to continue facing the elves "We are on a mission, let's stick to it only please" And although she was being completely serious, she couldn't help but unconsciously rub her cheek together with M's while her tail moved from side to side joyfully. Her cat spirit controlling her while still allowing her to speak was fine with that much.

Thinking that the matter had been settled or rather that the issue had been dealt with, Annariel started to walk. Though elf ears are sensitive to sound so she did hear a light set of steps quickly moving behind her, she thought that it was her companions following after her. Then Aislin spoke, asking to rearrange the formation, though in full on drill captain mode, Anna began to consider it yet unfortunately at this point she felt something weigh on her from behind.
Did she just?
Annariel began to look back and then she felt something wet and sharp bite into her ear. The elf's mind went white. Elf ears were sensitive....
. .. ... ..... ....... ........
Kouko jumped down and then ran towards Mairwen, said something. But Annariel was deeply in her own head. She was shocked and after a second, she blinked and her shoulders began to tremble. Seething in anger.
Over the next few moments, Anna went through several emotions. First indignation, then anger, disgust. Though her eyes had no magical properties, for a split of a second they seemed dangerously darker. Then Annariel shoulders stopped shaking and her expression went neutral. She continued walking.
Annariel looked at Mairwen and Aislin "Let's move." Then moved past them and into the town. She was done with the tiny cat person, she wasn't going to speak to Kouko ever again. This is why I hate working with their kind... That was Annariel's only thought on the matter.
The choice the Elf Warden made was simple. She was going to protect Aislin and Mairwen from Kouko's stupidity. Whatever she did was no longer her concern and Anna would live the consequences. In short, from now on Annariel was going to ignore Kouko. This also meant that Annariel selfishly decided to step down from her self appointed position of leadership and that she would stop voicing her opinions. Not that she announced it.
Because Annariel knew herself and she was well aware of her pride. Another insult like that... Her knightly ways would not allow Annariel to simply shrug it off. They were in a dangerous area and in-fighting was a sure death sentence. For the sake of her oath she didn't demand any reparations to her honor being sullied. So the High Elven lady decided to "remove" her personality from the party to avoid a bigger incident.

Everything seemed to be going to hell in a handbasket, and admittedly, most of it was Kouko acting impulsively, which was a little frustrating. "Eh? My, this party isn't going to be big on talking things out, is it?" Aislin asked. She'd at least had a little more faith in Annariel, but it seemed like she couldn't back her attitude up. For all the high and mighty attitude, Annariel certainly seemed to be acting immaturely by going all huffy and silent. It was a real shame too. She seemed reasonable enough until she was bit on the ears.
She too was an elf so she understood the feeling Annariel had gone through, she'd just hoped it would be handled with a little more poise than simply stomping off in a rage.
That meant she probably had to be the adult in the room and none of the party seemed terribly fond of her so far. That was sort of unfortunate. "Everyone~ We have a job to do. If we could put our differences aside, completing the quest would be much simpler, and for the better considering how dangerous the request made it out to be. We should all try approaching this with a clear head and work with each other for the time being!" She had little faith in this working, overall. No one seemed particularly fond of her, but maybe she could prove herself by trying to be useful and keeping the party together.
Kouko seemed awfully protected of 'M,' but mostly in a way that really seemed unfounded. It was manageable, but if she kept acting so impulsively it would be a pain for the rest of the group. "I'm sure she is, but knowing about any other skills would certainly be useful." Aislin replied to Kouko. She sighed. Why was everyone in this party so high strung. Sure there was a risk of dying and everything, but wasn't that just the nature of going on quests like this? Maybe everyone was new to this. Maybe they weren't used to wandering like she was.
If this meant it would turn into cat and elf tribalism, so be it, but of the people who had a point, Annariel seemed to have the best one, even if she was being a little melodramatic about it. The attitude was a bit of a pain, but at least she could back the sentiment up.
"Would you like to talk to me?" she offered, practically purring. "You seem awfully out of sorts over something so small." It seemed like she wasn't taking any of it very seriously, mostly because she wasn't. It was nice to have someone who was on task, but not if they weren't going to be willing to work with anyone about anything.
She sighed. "Geez, I'm starting to understand why my kind like to be solitary if this is what everyone else is like at the least bit of a set back . . ." She said. "Don't go so bent out of shape over the small things, okay? Not everyone's the type that works with strict rules and orders. Sometimes in a more informal group like this you need to let yourself be a little more . . . mmmm . . . maybe organic is the word? Don't be so rigid, is my point. Be the leader if you want, but if you start yelling at everyone out of the gate, everyone will just get upset. Understand?"
Aislin really hoped this would work and not just create more drama between the party. Not only it would it reduce the chances of success, but it would certainly make the whole experience less pleasant.

Intervention(Narration) The Wheel of Fate is Turning
With the vague information the scouting party (Kouko and Mairwen) had about their Gnoll threat in the city, none of them realized that one of the most experienced Gnolls had spotted them as they were about to leave, thanks to one of the hybrids making noises before leaving the place. Kar'thu, the leader of the pack after being informed of the situation by his elite decided to confront the bugs head on before they made their way into the city. His second hand and best crossbow shooter, Lu'tra was also his strategist and came up with a plan that would definitely work in a 13 vs 2 situation (A number that the party doesn't know yet, Kouko's information only revealed 8). The pack of Gnolls decided to divide themselves in three groups in case the last one failed, one concealed in the town in spots where their crossbow shooters would have terrain advantage and a second one scattered in pairs inside some building walls ready to charge at her enemies. Lastly, the third group was sent after the two scouts with the order of bringing their heads and not to come back until they got them. Gnolls are usually dumb and easy to deal with, even in high numbers but this pack was something else. The group chasing after the two scouts consisted of 5 melee Gnolls. 3 of them armored with Leather, a shield and an axe and the other two with heavy maces that could cut through any defense, as well as heavy armor to provide extra defense for themselves. This group of Gnolls, even if outnumbered won't scatter and will fight till the end. Staff notes: - This group of Gnolls is fierce, the faster ones are the ones carrying the shields and axes and usually attack together against one target while the slowest one carry magical hammers with them that make their attacks heavier than they should be. These magical hammers are strong enough to break through magical barriers, parries or shields at ease so the best chance against them is to avoid their attacks and not fight any of them alone. - Every Gnoll in this group fight independently of each other (meaning us, the staff will be controlling their actions), they are experienced in combat so taking them lightly could be dangerous. - The smell of blood from their own kin alerts them of danger, meaning that if the party manages to kill the first group the remaining in the city will be alert for the arrival. - Usually, Gnolls scatter and flee when their leader is dead but this group won't do such a thing until their leader and sub leader die. - This first group of Gnolls are all categorized as Strong in the party's bestiary, meaning strategy is required in order to take them down.
