In front of a thick fog right outside the supposed "Ghost Town" there had been rumors of a child wandering about... but perhaps it could have been something far more sinister. The first to arrive was a man who claimed to be unconcerned with what it ways, but mostly he didn't really believe either of the two suggested possibilities were valid. With a ting of curiosity and the desire to get paid he waits at the entrance to the town, awaiting those that would join him. The clouds and darkness in the night sky indicated it was at night, but in truth time was just about evening, when the sun starts to set. Still, true darkness was approaching fast so if those that took this quest wanted to get to the bottom of things they would have to hurry.
There were reports of a child being spotted here luring people into the "Ghost Town". Tch, it was probably nothing more than the fog messing up people's vision. Whatever it was, I'm here to find out and get paid. ... Still, if child was lost here all alone... hm, the thought certainly brings back... I suppose I'll let the others deal with it if that's the case. The truth of what's going on here will be revealed in time, but for now... I wait... |

While she didn't expect to be living at an inn, let alone one as infamous as the Heaven's Gate Marigold found her current living arrangement rather enjoyable. Having to pay for such accommodations on the other hand - well, her only experience with money back home was collecting the donations from the altar. Fortunately for the young acolyte of Norn, she now lived in Hyo Shin. Out in the frontier, there was always paying work for those that had a particular set of skills, and as it turns out, having a Burial Shroud capable of wielding a sword was one of these skills. Furthermore, it seemed that taking this particular job fulfilled her duties and filled her purse as well.
A small part of her wondered if she should be collecting money for doing her moral responsibility. After all, as an devotee of Norn, leaving helpless children in a ghosts town was unthinkable. Even if the reports were caused by a restless spirit, it would have been her sacred duty to help it move on. "Either way." Marigold decided, pumping her fists enthusiastically with a smile breaking through her puzzled expression. "We have to do it anyway, right? We'll worry about the reward later! Death comes after life!" After taking a moment to readjust the strap that kept her massive sword hanging from her shoulder, the girl let out a cheer and raced towards the meeting place with her faithful servant floating after her.
"Let's go!"
In hindsight, it wasn't the best idea. By the time she was within shouting distance of her destination, there were beads of sweat forming on her brow, her elegant robes were slightly unkempt and her pace had slowed to a brisk walk. "H-Ha! M-Made it!" She wheezed with pride as she caught her breath and taking her place beside the raven-haired youth that had already been waiting. "Have you been waiting long?" Marigold asked as she straightened her posture, all traces of exhaustion replaced with a characteristically bright smile. "Hope we're not late to our first task because that'd be pretty embarrassing."

"We haven't been waiting for too long." Said a baritone accented voice to the tired and unkempt midget.
A presence that was OBVIOUSLY not seen when Sugiyama strolled in piped up with said voice, hopping out of a nearby bush just right at the mouth of the town entrance. Oddly for someone tall, he can remain hidden pretty well. It wasn't clear when he arrived, if he snuck into the shrubbery, or if he laid in wait the whole time, but here he was, Tiber, erecting out of a bush with his head popping out, and the rest of his body. He stood tall, next to said bush, that was right near Kai, by the entrance. With scrutiny, he glances around randomly, keeping gaze over his new companions, and then the hamlet/town itself.
Filthy, disgusting, and ramshackle with all abodes of congestion of meatsacks all gathering in one location, to tirelessly work themselves until death. Funny thing that, with people, and an interesting thing to note, but utterly droll.

The ceremonial explanation of what we can do. As I wait for the others to arrive, in the distance I can hear a girl running at a brisk pace. I glance over in here direction as she and floating companion of her's follows suit, with her being slightly out of breath. She seems relived to have made and asks if she made it on time and that it would be embarrassing for her to be late on her first job. She seems to be the bountiful cheerful type, can't say I agree with her attitude but, at least she's not the type of person I can see myself getting into an argument with, like last time. Before I can answer her another figure appears from a nearby brush, one waiting here even before me, and he answers her that we haven't been waiting too long. ... I can't say I even know who this guy is, but it seems these two, the girl and guy will be those who I will be working with today. "Like the man said, you right on time." So far, the people I've met here in Hyo Shin seem pretty eager to get on with quests, going great lengths to prepare themselves and arrive early. It was a good sign, that the group had some level of competence to them. "Anyway, I hate to be the one to bring it up, but this the part where we introduce ourselves and give insight on what we can do. My name is Sugiyama Kai, I'm a Hex Blade that deals in sword, spell, and curses. All of which I use to lethal precision, my designated role is that of a slayer, and so long as you stay out of my way, you shouldn't have much to worry about with me." After a quick pause, I speak again to get our group to brainstorm any ideas before going in blindly. "Before we head in there, I suggest we use this time to come up with a plan. The scouts from before don't give us much to work with, but we do something about a potential child, or ghosts. If anyone has a suggestion on how to deal with those, it's best to get them out now." FootNotes
Kai is his first name, btw. |

Having previously noted that the black haired man was alone, Marigold had already reassured herself that she was not late. After all, there were supposed to be a total three people who had volunteered to go on this particular quest. Needless to say, the girl was rather surprised when a blond man appeared from within a bush. Not from behind the shrub, like a more sensible individual, but from within. Stories that had such characters often ended badly. This one could have as well, if the young acolyte did not consciously stop Thirteen from drawing the blade at her waist. The man may have had a perfectly reasonable explanation, or he may just have been a little broken. Either way, she found such antics amusing.
"Thank Norn!" The girl giggled in relief as she did her best to make herself more predictable, as the various leaves and twigs scattered on the weird man's clothing had made her self-conscious. As she did, Marigold heard the black-haired man confirm her punctuality before sharing an extensive introduction. Compared to the blond, this Sugiyama Kai, seemed a lot more serious. Not exactly a bad thing, though the acolyte hoped he wasn't too strict - she just knew that she would be humming to keep the gloom of this abandoned mountain town at bay. At least Kai seemed to be friendly enough; maybe he'd even smile before the end of the day. That'd certainly take the edge off.
Focusing on the task at hand with a renewed smile, she followed her more aloof companion's example. "Introductions are certainly in order." Giving her skirt one final dusting before starting her own introduction. "Well, I'm Marigold. Marigold Luminari, a cleric of Norn, and this here is Thirteen." Her familiar twisted in place as it was introduced, seemingly resisting the wind passing through. "Leave the front lines to us! We may be a bit new at this whole adventuring business, but we're a lot tougher than we look." Marigold smiled wide as she finished, obviously full confidence.
Hearing Kai inquire about a plans or suggestions, Marigold cupped her chin between a thumb and a forefinger for a moment before responding. "I can say anything regarding details, but I would suggest that we do this as fast as we can. Ghosts become harder to exorcise as with time and if it's a child, we'll need to rescue them as soon as possible. I mean, it's already a miracle they lasted this long. Either way, there wouldn't be a point in sneaking around. Whoever - or whatever - is in there probably already knows we're here." Her smile, which had vanished during her explanation, returned at this point. With arms akimbo, she continued. "Basically, I think we should just get in there, announce our presence and deal with what comes."

For the oddest of reasons, Tiber got the impression the cockatoo haired fellow with squinty eyes seemed to be self-narrating to himself, but that's just Tiber's gut feeling, shrugging that off. Shrugging, he gestures for the two of them onwards to the village. He also noted the odd motions from the cleric of Norn, acknowledging her possible movements with wary eyes, but did little as she hasn't acted on whatever it was she intended. "I am Tiber, and I happen to be a sword for hire. My specialties are nowhere near as focused as either of yours, but versatility works to my advantage either ways." The man remarked casually, and vaguely enough with another shrug. He seemed heedless of the twigs and branches and all that foresty stuff slipping off his clothes, shaking himself as they slid off, leaving him in his immaculate appearance, dressed in clothes that weren't stained in fecal matter conveniently enough.
And then his glance took him all over, to the village, to the pair of mortals in his vicinity, his surroundings, and so on and so forth. "I suppose announcing our presence could work, but should push come to shove, I can also suppose we may have to play with those fickle spirits a bit. They aren't often hostile, so, who knows? Lead on, Cleric of Norn."

Narration Though the area is foggy even in the sunniest of days, the closer the group approaches the village visibility worsens considerably. At night the town felt even more forbidding and unholy. Whatever calamity had befallen this abandoned village had not left it yet, it was almost as if the very land had been cursed. Though there was no real wall to circle around the town and the farther out of the center was sparsely built with ruined farmsteads, the center was more properly constructed though equally ruined, perhaps it was the humidity of the permanent fog but much had decayed over the decades. Regardless, the fog was clearly the thickest the further into the village and it almost acted like a wall of it's own. The atmosphere was tense yet dead silent, save for the occasional hoot of an owl and the creaking of a flapping and unhinged door somewhere further in the town. Obviously there was no illumination and because it was at night it became harder to see. If one entered the town and the thick fog, then seeing beyond three meters was a miracle. The feeling of oppression and defilement was unmistakable. It was no wonder then that any sane living being gave a wide berth to this entire area. If the party continued down the main road, the feeling of being watched became obvious. Even under the cover of the fog, that feeling would not subside. If they walked three blocks into the town, then perhaps they could make out a distant light. On a house that had half collapsed there was a light, it was the light of tiny fire being lit inside the house. Save for one half opened shutter all other windows had been boarded up. Curiously the lower half the door had been broken. Any attempts at shouting and communicating would only be greeted by silence.

After I introduce myself, the other two follow suit, the girl revealing she is a cleric of the deity Norn name Marigold, and the male not revealing much other than a lack of specialization and his name of Tiber. The girl also reveals that her undead companion's name is Thirteen. In regards to our plan, Marigold mentions that we should charge right in and deal with the consequences later, and from the look of things it seems Tiber agrees. "Very well then, lets get this over with quickly." I head into the "Ghost town" first with the others following suit. As I enter the over bearing fog is instantly noticeable. It's even worse than the last time I was here with the wolves... But, something else is afoot, it seems the others are gone... no... rather the fog is so thick making them out is impossible. I ready my blade to face any threat that comes my way. Don't know how effective steel is against apparitions, but my magic might be able to do something, while I can still cast it.

This place lived up to the rumors, that much was certain. Barely a few minutes into their expedition, the little party had was surrounded by the signs of a typical ghost town minus actual ghosts; for now, at least. Even the lingering fog seemed to try its best to make them all feel unwelcomed. Well, it tried. However, Marigold was not one to scare easily and as she promised herself, she would happily break the silence with the tune of a funeral dirge. It was unlikely the others would have recognized the song. As "The Last Dance of the Second Son" is an obscure song to begin with, and the girl gave it enough cheer to it sound more like a parade march.
"Alright, then!" She cried out, pumping a fist in the air as she turned on her heels to face the maze of dilapidated structures. Obviously undaunted by the stifling aura and unconcerned with stealth, Marigold signaled the others with a loud cheer. "Here we go!"
Apparently immune to the depressing atmosphere, Marigold walked ahead of her companions, leading them deeper into the village. If there was something to be found within, the girl assumed it would likely be at the literal center of town. The assumption was soon proven correct when the first sign of illumination struggled to make it through the fog. "Look over there!" The priestess of Norn called out, pointing to the light in the distance with a hopeful expression. "There must be something there, and I say we go find out what it is."
The girl resisted the urge to run right ahead, managing to recall how serious the situation could be. "What do you two think?" Turning around, she hoped to consult her companions on their opinions. Whether or not they could heard through this unnatural fog was question they would soon find the answer to - if they were still even there.

Oh, if only Tiber was somebody that was NOT possessed by a wind spirit, he would actually feel threatened by these posers living in the ghost town. Posers, that's the word he thinks of when it comes to these bastards ruining his style. He has seen plenty of spirits back when he was a spirit, back in his days, but this ghost town? If it wasn't anymore obvious that it was haunted, he'd gag with disgust.
Pulling out his dagger, the man named Tiber strolls in behind the guy with a cockatoo hairdo, unperturbed by the oppressing atmosphere, and if anything, severely annoyed at the welcome he was getting from these ghost bastards.
The walk into this town found Tiber glancing around everywhere at random intervals, looking at house, to house, to house, and the occasional ground, buildings, and what have you. The fog itself... seemingly lingering on his mind for some decision, one he could not decide, but then his thoughts were interrupted by the prattling of the blonde midget with drill hairdo, who fancies herself a follower of Norn, deity of death and someone Tiber had no business bothering to know.
His glance only momentarily met Marigold's form, but then wandered all over the place.
"Yeah, sure, check that out and everything." Tiber noncommittally remarked with a shrug, "It's our only lead, and it beats waiting around in this dump."
